Staring into the Brink: Antoin Gibson’s “The Rise and Fall of Eternity”

London artist and Circum-Sŏnus founder Antoin Gibson confronts the brittle architecture of human mortality on his dark new EP, “The Rise and Fall of Eternity”. Rather than offering neat catharsis, Gibson uses his collision of industrial weight, bruised alternative pop, and theatrical storytelling to document a mind wrestling with terminal grief and societal decay.

Opener “Introduction to the Unexplained” wastes no time with polite pleasantries. It begins as a slow, ominous simmer before erupting into an urgent, staccato vocal sprint, anchored by sweeping cinematic highs and deep, tectonic frequencies that bypass traditional hooks entirely. From there, the descent deepens. “Pandora’s Paradox” pulses with distorted midtempo bass and glitchy friction, leaving airy, unsettling vocal tones to hover over a fatalistic plunge into nihilism. When “Dystopian Empress” arrives, the mood shifts into an imposing, apocalyptic parade a mechanical march celebrating the total downfall of an arrogant civilization kneeling before an unforgiving ruler.

Gibson keeps the tension suffocating on “Mirrors Behind the Smoke.” Here, a crushing, alternative metal undercurrent grinds forward while soaring vocal arcs strip away every comforting illusion, exposing the terror of unavoidable personal rot. Yet the record’s most striking emotional rupture happens on the closer, “Fortune Favours the Timeless.” Shelving the abrasive low-end, Gibson introduces a fragile, recurring melodic progression that builds toward an expansive, heartbreaking crest before slowly dissolving into a sparse, lingering finish. It captures two figures bound by a profound connection, powerless against the clock running out between them.

Across five chapters, Gibson probes whether our final breath marks an absolute blackout or the threshold of something unknowable. The soundscapes can feel bleakly claustrophobic, but there is an undeniable honesty in watching an artist look directly into the void without flinching. When the dust finally settles, are we outlasting the catastrophe, or simply waiting for oblivion to claim what was already doomed?
