Nagoya, Japan-based rock band Chai. Mana, Kana, Yuuki, and Yuna are the four members of the group. Pink, the band’s first studio album, was released in 2017.
“SURPRISE,” the band’s latest song, has been released as an official music video. In Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture in 2012, twins Mana and Kana, together with sisters Yuna and Yuuki, created the band, Chai. Mana, Kana, and Yuna all grew up in Nagoya and attended the same high school, where they all graduated together.
Aiko and Tokyo Jihen were among the artists they covered as members of their high school’s light music club.
Yuna exposed the other band members to Japanese music that did not readily fit into the typical notion of “J-Pop,” such as the band Cero or Kimyo Reitaro.
The other members of the band provide support vocals for the group’s principal singer, Mana. Mana handles the keyboards, Kana the guitar, Yuna the drums, and Yuuki the bass.
Mana sings and Kana plays the guitar as they co-write most of the songs on their phones using the voice memo app. Each song’s arrangement is created by the whole band, with lyrics written by Yuuki.
CHAI secured a contract with Burger Records in February of 2018 and subsequently with Heavenly Recordings in August of the same year.
CHAI will embark on their 13-city Europe Tour in the United Kingdom in October after completing four successful US tours, including appearances as both the headliner and opening act in Europe.
